John Ponton

Born about 1696, and died 25 October 25 1767; buried at Little Ponton. Recorded in the parish register as having witnessed the induction of the new Vicar in 1729, and as churchwarden thenceforward.

NOTICE is hereby given THAT John Ponton, of Little Ponton near Grantham in the County of Lincoln, is chosen one of his Majesty's Coroners for the said County in the room and stead of Thomas Doubleday, late deceased. Stamford Mercury, 26 July 1744

Apparently married firstly to Barbara, who was buried at Little Ponton 16 July 1734 ("...the wife of Mr. Jno Ponton" In the parish register)

  1. Thomas Ponton. Died 23 February 1782 at Barnby in the Willows, Notts.

    Married at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, on 24 December 1751, to Elizabeth Gilbert, who was baptised 4 October 1716 at Barnby in the Willows, and died there 4 July 1782.

Married secondly on 22 September 1738 at Harby, Leicestershire, to Mary Dalby of Harlaxton. She died 17 June 1743 aged 33, and is buried at Little Ponton.

Issue with this wife one daughter and two sons:

  1. Mary Ponton, born 1 May 1740 at Little Ponton. Married at Little Ponton on 3 October 1759 to John Steel of Scottlethorpe.

  2. John Ponton, baptised 19 August 1741 at Little Ponton, and buried there 18 March 1743.

  3. John Ponton, baptised 19 June 1743 at Little Ponton.

Married thirdly on 4 November 1749 at Coston, Leicestershire, to Mary ??. She died 31 August 1782 aged 72, and is buried at Little Ponton.

  1. Elizabeth Ponton, baptised 30 January 1751 at Little Ponton, and died in Durham in 1831.

    Married at Little Ponton on 13 April 1771 to Rev Reynold Gideon Bouyer.

    I Elizabeth Bouyer being of sound mind and memory do hereby make my last Will and Testament and do give and bequeath as follows ffirst I give to my Nephew the Reverend John Steel of Cowbit in the County of Lincoln all my books a set of silver castors and twenty four plain Silver fforks Item I give to my Niece Charlotte Wright of Edenham in the said County of Lincoln my silver Tea Pot Item I give to Ann Myers Wife of the reverend Timothy Myers of Stannington in the County of Northumberland my Silver Coffee Pot Item I give to my Servant Mary Gleason if she shall continue in my service at the time of my death but not otherwise all my wearing apparel Item I give to my Niece by Marriage Sarah Perigal of Durham All monies and other my Goods and Effect and I do hereby constitute the said Sarah Perigal my sole Executrix of this my last Will and testament Witness my Hand this seventh day of August 1828 Her will
