Charles Whewell Willis

Born 18 September 1835 at Cambridge, second son of Professor Robert Willis, and baptised at St. Andrew the Great 6 May 1836. Educated at Marlborough College August 1848 - Midsummer 1853. At the time of his marriage, described as an engineer, residing in Greenwich, but by the 1861 census they were living at 7 Moore (Marlborough?) Place, Lambeth. Then at 40 Queen Street, Hammersmith in 1871 in 1881 (when he was 'out of employment'), and 17 Stanbury Road, Camberwell in 1891 ('Living on his own means') and 1901 ('Retired Mechanical Engineer') and 1911. Died 28 November 1917, aged 82.

Married at St George the Martyr, Southwark, on 17 January 1861, to Fanny Elizabeth Brown. She was born at Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, 5 April 1835, daughter of George Brown, a builder, and died 8 March 1916 at Stanbury Road.

Issue four daughters and three sons:
  1. Fannie Maud Willis, born 5 November 1862 at Kennington, and died 15 September 1939 at 38 Buckingham Road, E11. Living in 1911 at 11 Leathwaite Road, Clapham Common.

    Married at St. Mary, Lambeth, on 5 October 1885, to William George Humphreys. He was born at Kennington in 1856, son of Henry Richard Humphreys (an artist), and died in 1906. Seems to have been a Solicitor's Clerk.

  2. Charles Arthur Willis, born at Lambeth about 1863. Living unmarried with his parents in the censuses (another Solicitor's Clerk), and died 23 September 1934 at 8 Townley-Road, East Dulwich.

  3. Frederick Louis Willis, born at Peckham about 1866, and died at Orpington, Kent, 11 January 1949. Living at 19 Dundas Road, Peckham, in 1891, and at 39 Stanbury Road, Peckham, in 1901 ('Commercial Clerk') and 1911 ('Ledger Clerk').

    Married, at St Giles Camberwell, on 15 September 1889 to Alice Maud Clissold. She was born about 1872 in Gloucestershire, and baptised 22 March 1872 at Rodborough, daughter of Samuel Clissold, a victualler, and died 28 November 1940 at 12 Raul Road, Peckham.

  4. Edward Alan Willis, born at Peckham about 1867 and baptised 3 November 1867 at Christ Church, Camberwell. With his parents up to and including the 1901 census, but in 1911 a visitor at Gun Farm, Knebworth ('Law Clerk'). Seems to have moved there, as listed at 'Alandale', London Road, Knebworth in 1926 and at his death, 11 August 1954.

    Possibly married someone called Kathleen.

  5. Alice Mary Willis, born at Camberwell about 1868, and died unmarried (on holiday at Beer in Devon) 13 September 1929. Still living at 17 Stanbury Road at her death.

  6. Agnes Victoria Willis, born at Peckham about 1870 and died at the Berslow Nursing Home, Hitchin, on 1 Dec 1955. At this time she was living at 24 Wadnell Way, Knebworth. Living with her husband at Westcliff-on-Sea in 1911.

    Married at St Marylebone on 30 July 1905 to Charles William Lee, son of John Cockburn Francis Lee, an engineer. He was born about 1865 at Hampstead, and died before 1955.

  7. Margaret Elizabeth Willis, born about 1876 and baptised at Hammersmith 11 June 1876. Living with her parents in the censuses, and died unmarried 5 March 1950. Living at 8 Townley Road, East Dulwich.
