Branston - CLERGYMAN KILLED ON RAILWAY
Residents in Branston will hear with deep regret of the untimely death of the Rev Peregrine Ed. Curtois, rector of Hemingford Grey, St. Ives, Hunts., and son of the late Rev Peregrine Curtois, rector of Branston from 1868-91. The deceased was walking on the railway between Houghton and Hemingford on Monday evening, when he was knocked down by a pilot engine and killed. He was born at Walpole St. Peter, where his father was living, on February 28th 1837, and consequently was close upon 62 years of age. The deceased took his M.A. at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and was ordained deacon by the Bishop of Ely in 1861 and priest in 1862. During 1861-1862 he was assistant curate to his father at Hemingford Grey, assistant curate at Market Deeping 1862-65, and in the latter year succeeded his father as Vicar of Hemingford Grey. His mariage took place at Market Deeping parish church on the 11th June 1868 to Sarah Ann, eldest daughter of Mr Harvey Stapleton of Market Deeping, and he leaves six children to mourn their loss. The deceased was extremely fond of campanology, and whenever he visited Branston he never failed to have the bells rung. To many people in Branston he was more than an acquaintance - he was a sincere and trusted friend - and his death under such painful circumstances will be heard of with deep regret and sorrow.
